This morning as I'm running an errand near Barger Elementary, I was so sad to see the state of utter selfishness in this town. I felt terrible for one of the crossing guards simply trying to ensure children could get to school safely and how many people blasted through the school zone. Some of you were not only speeding, but weaving through the traffic to get around the few who were obeying the school zone. There were kids everywhere and the pure disregard for their safety just made me angry. This is not the same city I was born and raised in.

Sadly, this is every school zone I go through daily. People going 65 in a 15. And cops seeing it happen and doing nothing!

Chattanooga has to put police in these areas at peak hours and start handing out tickets. I’ve always been appalled at the lack of allowing emergency personnel to get by in this city let alone the clear lack of caring for children and families in school zones.

I’ve lived a lot of places and Chattanooga absolutely tops the list of impatient, mean, and aggressive drivers for me personally.

School zones are incredibly dangerous. It is weird because the speed limit is like 15-20mph or whatever, but people do incredibly stupid stuff. There is an intersection in a school zone where it seems like someone gets hit every year, and several people have died.

That's crazy. If a school zone is so inconvenient, either leaver earlier or go a different route!

Not in Hixson, I've seen that dude literally jump in front of cars to make them slow down.

This happens every single day. That’s the way I go to work, and there’s maybe a handful of people I see actively treating it like a school zone. The rest of the crowd just ignores it or treats it like an inconvenience.

Drivers all over town seem to have gotten worse over the past few years. People often don’t treat driving like a responsibility until it’s too late.

People drive fucking insane on N Moore Rd. I lived over there for a couple years and during that time, the poor guy on the corner of N Moore and Old Mission had his fence (and almost house) ran into like 3 separate times.

I’ve lived all over the country and this place is undoubtedly the worst place to drive in. Every single time I get in the car it feels like someone just about kills me because they can’t keep it in their lane. People here are not only oblivious to their surroundings, it’s like they legitimately do not know how to operate a vehicle.

Reckless driving in a school zone is a class B misdemeanor and you can get up to 6 months jail, not that they give a shit

Damn! And I was pissed the other day when a big SUV ran up the bike lane, right past me while I was stopped at the light, so they wouldn't have to wait to turn right. I also used to hate when I took a gamble leaving work by lining up to turn right onto a road with a clear "NO LEFT TURN" sign and ended up stuck, waiting on some jackass with their left blinker on, waiting for a break in traffic that will never come. Hmm, I wonder why they say no left turns...

Scenarios like this is why I question why cops waster their time shooting radar. Just drive around all day and ticket people for stupid and dangerous shit like this.

Why don’t fines double in a school zone like they do in construction zones?

Society as a whole has become more selfish in the last 10 years. You see it everywhere, but it's more noticeable in the smaller/southern cities. I have no idea if it is due to the political climate, social media, northern "in-migration"... but everyone is just so impatient and inconsiderate now. It really is disappointing.

What happens if your brakes fail when you are zipping through an active school zone?

If semis can stop, so can you

I drove through Orchard Knob’s school zone the other day and was the only one following the speed limit.

I’ve seen so many drivers here drive the wrong way down the street because they don’t want to wait in the turn lane. So many people blow through red lights. Drivers here are very self righteous in a dangerous way.

One time I was waiting at a red light and some ahole flew around me (light still red) and almost hit a guy turning. Some people are so stupid and selfish.

That's wild. CCS gets a cop to direct traffic every day. Sounds like Barger needs one too, especially on Brainerd Rd

The amount of people in the mornings on East Brainerd road who ignore the school bus stop sign is appalling. Last week traffic was stopped on the opposite side of the road for the bus so someone decided to drive in the turning lane to pass all the cars stopped 🙄
