Police don't think it's a bomb, but they don't know what it is yet. Pic of dad plus two bomb squad* people looking at it.
...
they refer on to ordinance bomb squad if they're not sure. but after a lot of digging and a broken pick axe they agreed it's not a bomb, and have left.

That looks like an old log splitter to me. If you place a log end-on on top of that and give it a mighty whack with a sledgehammer, the log will end up in several pieces. Also works if it's a bomb.

Phone the police, they will come round and probably dig it up, even if it isn't a bomb, it saves you a lot of digging

Better safe than sorry here. It's better to call someone and potentially look slightly silly, rather than the alternative..

I'm EOD. I say probably not from what I can see. 'Probably' isn't good enough though so call the police and have them come and look. If they're not happy, they'll task EOD for you. Where abouts are you?

Former police call handler here. Doesn't matter if it actually is or not, call 999 now.
Now.

I think it’s a old post anchor.

Quite possibly yes.
Get the fuck away, call the police on 999, NOW.
If it isn't a bomb, you won't be in trouble, they really really take this kind of thing seriously.
Where abouts roughly btw? This will be news if it is one. You might become semi-famous!
But please don't become semi-famous for being turned into a light mist scattered for several miles around your garden.

Doesn't look like it, but if in doubt ring 999, otherwise you'll have one heck of a headache

I'm not totally convinced that it's one but I think you should call 999 because it's really not the kind of thing you want to risk being wrong about, especially if bombs have previously been found in the area.

Last week someone dug up a cannon ball and the army came out.
Best to call the police.

Given the fact NEXT DOOR WAS BOMBED during the war, I would say the chances of it being an unexploded bomb alot higher than if you were in the middle of the Shetland Isles.

I just looked up German ww2 bombs. I think you should call 999 right away. It could be something completely harmless but you really don’t know

On the one hand, I'm not aware of any WWII bombs with 5 spokes, I think they either had 4 or a square.
On the other hand, any chance of getting blown to bits is too high. Call 999 now, they'll sort it out.

no reply yet, so they either exploded, or are doing gardening elsewhere.. I've encouraged them to call 999!
UPDATE: police on the way!
EDIT 2 (8.10pm) police still expected, but not arrived yet. hope they bring a torch.

Looks like an old construction anchor, for a post or even a shed - but, if you’re unsure, always worth calling police out to check - they’d prefer you did than risk blowing the street up.

The fins look misaligned but anyway, call the police on 101 and seek advice.
While you wait, pack up for some time out of the house should the police summon the bomb squad.
