I recently had this conversation with friends. apparently everyone has at least one weird channel that they watch. for me it is this old guy that talks about life in Japan. My feed lately has just been full of clickbait and drama so im looking for a new watch.

The only obscure youtube channels I watch are for musicians that are not well known and I watch their music videos.

Otherwise, I suspect the channels I watch are pretty popular.

We did start watching Tasting History when it was obscure but it quickly blew up.

If you like Video Essays, there’s several channels with an extremely large disparity between subscriber count and quality.

The Leftist Cooks - Probably just the straight up best and most prescient essays on the platform. They have 67k subscribers as of yesterday.

CJ the X - he kinda sorta blew up a bit a while back but has pulled back from YT the last year. Everything he’s done is absolutely fantastic.

Mia Cole - she’s gone dark for almost a year but as a millennial, I find her perspective very interesting, and her style is undeniable. It’s a literal crime that she has less than 60k subscribers.

And for my dark horse pick, he’s bigger than the rest of these guys but in the subculture of gaming review channels he is criminally underrated. Noah Caldwell Gervais. If you need a relaxing voice talking to you about something he is deeply passionate about for an obscene number of hours, Noah is your dude. Admittedly, that’s a pretty niche thing, but whatever that is, Noah is the king of it.

My BF has introduced me to @Steve1989MRE, who opens and eats (if it’s safe) military ration packs. It’s absolutely fascinating, a bit gross and really interesting all at the same time.

Edit: just saw that he has over 2M subscribers, so maybe not so obscure! Was to me though

T's storytime - he talks about folklore from around the US

wicked encounters - similar to Ts storytime but shes more focused on spooky folklore, paranormal stuff, aliens, basically all things weird and scary

evolve.2 - he talks about human evolution, anthropology, and archaeology

tia renai - she does ren faire and thrifting content

that kodocha girl - her entire channel is dedicated to the anime / manga series kodocha

bren bren - he makes random videos about cartoons

these are pretty much all of the obscure channels that i follow 😊

Maybe not obscure but VWestlife. He has decent subscribers and consistent views, but imo he is under viewed. No sensationalist content, strictly interest videos about tech products mostly from the 90's. Reminds me of the older YouTube feel

cari can read (Such a peaceful booktube channel, but also some characterful book recaps, lots of South Korean life thrown in there too (she also has a vlog channel cari cakes). Best booktuber I’ve come across since paperbackdreams who hadn’t posted in a while.)

Listening In (Introspective film score essay pieces.)

Fallow (Love watching body cam of the chefs on the different stations, calm and intriguing to watch.)

Golden Hive Mead (Grounded channel, small alcohol making.)

Foil Arms and Hog (Hilarious Irish comedian sketches.)

Biffa Plays Indie Games (His Cities Skylines series is really fun, especially the road management videos become addicting.)

J. Draper (Makes history fun and interesting for everyone (you’ve probably seen them on socials.))

ThePeaceAround (Thoughtful, emotional and sometimes energetic Eurovision content from a musician.)

ESC Tom (Best guy for Eurovision analytics.)

Shane’s Eurovision Review (Another great person for Eurovision content.)

Fernand’s Live Show Show (Take a look behind screen at production on Eurovision, sport events and more.)

Bob Brickman / Brickcrafts (Out of this world Lego city, all own designs, main build is European town/village style, others include Western. Even someone not into Lego would be fascinated. Is Austrian so has a German speaking main channel and an English speaking channel.)

TheBrickinPanda (Adorable quaint Lego city.)

Professor Pouncey (Great guy with his great husky voiced cat in a box on the front of his bike, driving around the forest.)

Pecos Hank (Storm chaser. Understands the seriousness while having fun, down to earth great guy, will take you in the whole journey from buying new cowboy hat, to saving animals from the road, to those from storm damaged homes. And of course the storm content is beautiful and incredible. Such a thrill but also calm vibe.)

Nomadic Ambience (Walkarounds across the globe, great camera. Check out there walks arounds New York at night / in the rain and Boston at Halloween.)

Rok Nardin (Composer, some great dark remixes, did two great Billie Eilish ones, sadly appears these are googleable but not on their YouTube anymore, some channels claiming to be the versions but aren’t)

Anna Lapwood (Very talented organist, probably seen her amazing Albert Hall content on socials.)

Hildegard von Bilngin’ (Bardcore, so joyful, check out their medieval version of Chappell Roan’s Pink Pony Club.)

Beadle The Bardcore (for more old fashioned music renditions of modern songs by the bards.)

Baumgartner Restoration (Painting restoration - fascinating, gentle learning, very peaceful/mindful to watch.)

James Juliet Art Tutorials (The best procreate tutor I’ve found, been too busy to give it a go yet though!)

Porfirio Jimenez Art (Incredible spray paint art, old style YouTube content.)

Buzzfeed Unsolved True Crime & Supernatural then later Watcher Ghost Files & Mystery Files (Although in pretty sure Shane and Ryan don’t class as obscure. Absolutely brilliant, the right level of fact, humour, fear and seriousness - don’t let the Buzzfeed part deter you, there’s a reason they were able to move to their own channel.)

Tom Scott (Legend. He’s the guy who’s not inside a fusion reactor, Platform 9 3/4, still in the Arctic, with Norm, back in the UK with a cold.)

Any Austin, he covers really strange topics in video games (like how realistic the woodworking is in Skyrim or Legend of Zelda, Employment surveys in different video game cities, how realistic the electricity grid in GTA 5 is, etc.)

Not sure how obscure as it has over a million subscribers but GeoWizard is good. He started out just playing GeoGuesser but it grew into geography challenges.

He has tried walking across countries in a straight line (in real life, not on a computer). I think those "straight line missions" are really good.

He also has some videos where users can send in a photo and he tries as accurately as possible to find the exact spot where the photo was taken.

De mi rancho a tu cocina

A lovely Mexican mom who cooks AMAZING, simple as hell food, mostly from their garden/land. It's in Spanish but you don't need to understand it, it's really clear what she's saying and doing. And most of the words are foods so it's easy to pick up if you know a tiny bit of Spanish. The food seriously looks so good. And she's so happy and lovely, watching the videos is like a warm hug from grandma.

Not sure what counts as obscure... but the most niche channel I follow is BlueJay. It's basically the funniest animated history channel that I know of.

I don’t watch many obscure channels, but:

Ruscel Torres makes some fantastic jazz covers of video game music, and KEI Guitar has great covers of Galneryus songs.

MAKiT makes extremely high quality math, physics, and chemistry video essays.

I think the one I watch regularly that has the lowest number of subscribers is Jackson Crawford, a channel by a guy with a Ph.D. in Old Norse.

Dimestore adventures. He looks at old cemeterys and old books, like 1800s, and old newspapers and tells stories about what he finds. Occasionally he will look at old tour books and things and try to find the stuff that is mentioned in there in current times without doing research. Sometimes he sees a lot of references to a particular geographic location which no longer exists on maps and tries to find it, like a spring. Sometimes he just reads a big list of old timey weight loss tips.

It's neat.

Maybe not weird or obscure but different: Wavy Boats (most mishaps in FL)

Pecos Hank for storm chasing

What does obscure mean here?

If you don’t watch video game story/analysis/retrospectives then even the bigger channels are obscure to you.

Anyway. Babbity Kate.

I don’t even care about the American girl dolls.

But damned if she doesn’t make me entertained about them.

Crowmudgeon for (analog) horror content.

Dual Process Theory for an *austistic* level of detail into FNAF.

Flawed Peacock. Just. He’s too good.

I finished a video game. This is long form content I live for.

If you like puzzles, you have to check out Cracking the Cryptic. 2 puzzles and crossword world champions solving crazy ass sudokus and logic puzzles. And, like, they are just these two middle-aged British guys who truly love puzzles.
