View submission: What’s the weirdest “unwritten rule” everyone just follows?

I kinda get irritated when I ask someone “how are you doing?” and they simply reply “fine” without asking me how I’m doing. So, I guess the unwritten rule that I think exists is that if someone asks you how you’re doing, you tell them and ask them how they’re doing.

I found out the hard way when people ask you that, they don't want a serious answer (unless maybe it's someone you're close with). I don't feel obligated to ask the question back since it's not a real question in the first place (but I may still do so, depending on the person asking).

I've always answered this question too honestly, since my first customer service job as a teen. I still do most of the time and feel guilty about forgetting to ask them how they are, almost every time.. I usually put it into the initial conversation, rather than overtly asking. I work in mental health and appreciate when ppl answer honestly when I do ask the question, often I reply with "well that's better than shit!" to lighten the mood if it's not a REALLY bad day!

I don't ask until I'm actually interested. I find it super rude to ask that a question if you don't care about the answer. It's probably cultural or something.

Its contextual, but sometimes just a formality. When I worked service jobs I'd ask because what else do you do, and never even noticed if someone asked it back or just said fine.

I equally get frustrated when I ask someone how they’re doing back and they choose to ignore me.

Ditto! The only correct answer to that question is..."fine, and you?"
