View submission: What’s the weirdest “unwritten rule” everyone just follows?

Clapping. When there’s something we like, we all bang our limbs together in excitement. We’re so enthused that we all start hitting ourselves to show our interest.

I've never thought of it this way and now I'm perturbed.

Little fun fact: people don't clap naturally. It's a learned behavior. I didn't know this until like a month ago when I looked up baby milestones. Babies are supposed to learn to clap and point by 12 months, something they learn from parents. I'm rushing to teach my kid because for some reason clapping/pointing is something I never really did with him. I've always said "yay" and done a little shakey hand motion thing up by my head or tapped two fingers aganist an object/tilted my head in direction I want him to look instead of pointing (I was taught pointing is rude). He mimics my motions but will be counted as "delayed" if he doesn't do the stereotypical gestures.

It does make a loud noise most people can replicate.

I fucking despise people who clap at the TV during a game, especially when it's otherwise quiet and relaxed. I was recently at a bar/tavern and this one guy would clap after Every. Single. Play. regardless of which team came out ahead. Like *Who's side are you on!*

Yeah. I went to a Slayer concert a few years ago and people would clap after every song.

Yes to this.

Some of the things we do as human beings are absolutely bizarre.....

An aliens observations would be perplexing.

Clapping (everyone beating themselves, just as you say).

Dancing (especially if viewed from afar and in silence.

Laughing (especially politely)
