View submission: What’s the weirdest “unwritten rule” everyone just follows?

“How was your day?”

There is no intention to learn how your day was. Only the desire to ask it.

I disagree - I think people usually want to know how your day was (maybe not every detail)

"How are you?", though, I think that's usually not an actual question.

As a northeasterner it was quite a trip when I visited California and greeted people with my usual "Howyadoin" only for some people to actually go ahead and start telling me how their day was.

No real desire to ask either, it’s the use your words version of a grunt acknowledging your existence.

I only ask this when I want to know how someone's day is.

Thus I use different greetings.

If someone asks me, they are getting an answer.
