View submission: What’s the weirdest “unwritten rule” everyone just follows?

Oh, that restroom table thing is so real! Another one is how we all avoid eye contact in elevators, even if we're the only two people in there. Just an unspoken rule!

I had a friend who was in the hospital all summer while I was in collage. Since I lived just down the street in the dorms, I would visit him every day.

I started talking to people in the elevator. So many people who are visiting and scared for family and friends, or nervous. People are always shocked when you greet them in the elevator, but most are happy to have a distraction.

I suspect this wouldn't work in an office building. But I talk Everytime I'm in a hospital elevator!

I was in an elevator once—a full one—when a guy in the front turned around and faced everyone and said, “I suppose you wonder why I called you all here?!”

And all facing forward. Unless it’s absolutely packed and you literally had to turn sideways to fit. But if you go to get in an elevator and there’s one person in there just facing one of the walls instead of facing out, I’m betting most people will either get in tentatively but watch the person / try to keep clear of them and get off quickly or will just NOPE and wait for a different elevator.

You better be facing forward, equal spacing and no talking.

Man I prefer being close to the restroom. Especially on planes. Makes it so easy to watch for when it is available as well.

Yeah there is a chance of smell, but 99/100 there is nothing.

i worked at a very fancy hotel for a while and had to take the elevator at least 20 times each shift…at first it was really awkward because doing the unspoken rule of avoiding eye contact made me feel like a true servant. eventually i started breaking the unspoken rule and would look at them. around 90% of people would start conversations with me immediately if i looked at them. i found that interesting.
