Why shouldn't Italy be ranked higher than the US? They have much better labour rights and social services, not to mention the higher food standards. Politically it's a mess and always has been, but it's still one of the wealthiest countries on Earth.

Everything south from Florence is in really bad shape and the infrastructure is terrible. I stayed in 5 star hotels in Rome and they didn't have simple stuff like a shower with good pressure and good internet. Naples look like a big slum, thr apartment complexes normal people live in look way worse than the favelas I am used with in Sao Paulo. Not a great place to live in. I guess it's good compared with the average of the world but it's way beneath the wealthier countries.
