when does a hardware wallet make sense? only passed a certain amount? would it be worth it for something as little as 100$/€?

The hardware wallet itself costs about $100 so I would say once you have $1000 or so in Bitcoin it makes sense. Until then you could probably use a mobile wallet just make sure you have your recovery words written down somewhere safe.
