Hi all! Bought my first home not too long ago and it came with bees! My lot is just about 1/4 acre, long and not wide. my back yard area is bisected by some pretty old Peruvian pepper trees and apparently there's a hollow in one of them that's PRIME hive location (so the bees seem to have decided). Been here just under two years, the bees swarm (just a couple days ago they were making quite the ruckus. It was neat). The bees stay on. Life is good. Also, the sight of the honeycomb sticking out of the tree is pretty cool to boot. As of now, the bees, my horses and the dog all seem to be cohabitating well and I think thats great; especially, since they're not at ALL defensive and don't seem to mind that I travel right under their hive multiple times daily (their tree is right outside one of my horse corrals). All of that said, I still worry... because the hive is growing.

I'd rather not mess with them if I don't have to but the safety of my horses is paramount. I'd also like to get a bit more educated. Can anyone recommend a good book or online resource to learn about what, if anything, I need to beware of or look out for?

When the hive starts getting crowded they will swarm so unless they can hollow the tree out more than what it is currently they will not get much bigger. Not sure how high in the tree the bees are but if the horses can’t get to the hive I would think they would leave them alone. Not sure where to send you for bees in a tree but if you think you would like to become a beekeeper, look up @barnyardbees. David does a great job explaining everything
