View submission: Are opticians just glorified salesman's now?
On the high street:
- Optometrist: Examines eyes, prescribes glasses/contact lenses, and manages some eye conditions.
- Dispensing Optician: Fits and supplies glasses and contact lenses based on prescriptions. (These are the people selling the frames/lenses)
- Optical Assistant: Assists in the sale and fitting of eyewear, supporting optometrists and dispensing opticians.
They are businesses and are trying to make a profit while adhering to professional standards.
In addition, in hospitals/clinics you find:
- Ophthalmic Medical Practitioner: Medical doctors who provide general eye care, excluding major surgery.
- Orthoptist: Specializes in treating disorders of eye movements and alignment.
- Ophthalmologist: Medical and surgical eye specialist who manages complex eye diseases and performs surgeries.
