View submission: Are opticians just glorified salesman's now?

I had a vision problem and was unable to get an appointment with my doctor for weeks.

I went to SpecSavers and they saw me there and then, with an OCT machine. 10 minutes later the optometrist was able to see I had CSR, and referred me directly to an NHS consultant. It cost about £30. They were brilliant, and worth every penny.

My GP won't deal with eye issues at all, you have to see an optician, it's on their website.

My mum managed to get herself an eye infection out of the blue a week before her scheduled cataract surgery and our local optometrist gave her a same day appointment during his lunch break because he was otherwise full. A lovely, lovely man. (Surgery had to be rescheduled in the end, but no ill effects from the infection thanks to prompt treatment from the optometrist.)
