View submission: Are opticians just glorified salesman's now?

Went to Specsavers 2 weeks ago. Full eye check with explanations of the tests and results. Then bought new glasses. But there was no pressure on what I chose and no long list of upgrades. The price was the price as stated clearly on both the frames (including std lenses) and on their website.

I know from the past some opticians will try and sell fancy coatings (that end up peeling - no thanks) but Specsavers did none of this. Straight forward and I paid only what I already knew would be the price from the website. Obviously, had I needed varifocal or had some other complication it might have been a little more complicated.

Same here. My prescription hasn’t changed for years and I’ve never felt pressured to buy new frames. Eye examinations have always been very thorough. As with all franchises, I imagine some branches of Specsavers may be better than others.

Neither Specsavers nor Vision Express have ever tried to upsell or force me to buy, they just ask "you need any help" and then go away if you say no.

Both their ranges of frames isn't that great, but that wasn't the question.

If your antireflection coating was peeling it wasn’t fancy it would have been basic.

Last time I went they asked me to shop for frames before the eye test! I don’t need glasses.
