View submission: Are opticians just glorified salesman's now?
You’ve mentioned a few issues with your eyes … but seem upset that they’ve offered you glasses? What were you hoping for when you mentioned eye issues?
To answer your question, no. They’re not glorified salespeople. I went in for an eye test, with blurry vision and headaches. After the optometrist did a number of tests she found I had swelling on the brain which was crushing my optic nerve and I was admitted straight to hospital after she made a phone call.
Probably saved my life, also didn’t try to sell me glasses while I was there.

Some opticians are glorified sales people. I tried a private opticians and they kept trying to sell me "designer" frames costing £300-£400+. When I told them I wanted to spend under £200 including the lenses, they still kept pushing and said they wouldn't recommend "cheap" ones.
I went elsewhere and got a pair for £150.

The people actually working the shop floor in something like Specsavers are absolutely just sales people under a different name.
The medical professionals are the ones doing the tests and managing prescriptions, the people up front selling the glasses (Optical Assistants, etc.) have minimal additional training.

Not all eye issues require refractive corrections... as you're probably aware.
