God I hate when my husband says he isn’t having any thoughts. HOW? Lmfao. My thoughts have thoughts.

That's part of it, though.

My thoughts have thoughts, too. The thing is that there may be so many mixed together that I wouldn't be able to accurately articulate exactly what I was thinking in particular, in that moment it's way easier to just say "Nothing (of any real importance)." than to try.

Gross generalization, some people are the opposite or not so extreme, etc etc etc, but: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SZ6mVumHY9I

Imagine your thoughts are trains on a track. Most of the time the track is busy with trains. Having no thoughts is just the gap between trains. If you calm and relax you can focus on nothing at all, you can get a long gap between trains.

If you are anxious then you can't think about nothing. If you aren't anxious, it's actually pretty easy.

I’m really enjoying reading everyone’s different ways of explaining their thought process. How about when you do a task? If I’m doing a monotonous task like sweeping or peeling potatoes or whatever, I’m usually not thinking of anything at all, just focusing on accomplishing the tasks. On a walk I might be occupied enough by observation and walking to not have anything on my mind. I suppose I could explain my observational thoughts but they’d usually only be “what’s that bird trying to do” or “I wonder if that guy is on his way to work” or “if this train got attacked how would I get out”. If I’m sitting on the couch staring into space then “nothing” is probably something meaningless not worth explaining, like wondering what spiders do in the winter.
