My 2nd great-grandfather owned slaves and we may have cousins not in the family tree.

Same. I have trace African ancestry and there's family lore about indiscretions from long ago, but no clue about that, really. Anyone who would have had real knowledge has long since passed on.

We did clear up the questions about my mom's paternity since my first cousins on that side are, in fact, first cousins. Unless, of course, my grandfather was not father to two of "his" kids. Lots of wildness on that side of the family tree that was open knowledge - everyone had a side piece, apparently.

I’ve always wondered why I never heard about the white Americans who knew directly which black families they caused harm and if reparations ever crossed their minds
