View submission: What's the longest unanswered question in your family's history?
My grandfather had a sibling who was institutionalized their whole life. We have no idea what was wrong with them.

Probably born with some obvious or assumed disability. People today don't understand the extreme pressure and social stigma that parents once faced having disabled children. There were actual laws forbidding those with disabilities from being seen in public.

thats so sad considering today people with disabilities are accepted to an extend...
a friend of a friend had a down syndrome baby 50 plus years ago now, the nurses asked her did they want them to take him away and put him in an institute she very much declined

My half sister's mother, Dad's first wife died in a mental institution. My father never talked about her and my mother said that all she ever knew was that "she was crazy".
