Sounds like your neighbor was my mom! (Not really - my mom died at 88). But $1,000/month social security, subsidized housing (even little towns have that), Meals on Wheels, Medicaid for life expenses….and us daughters for new clothing, Bath and Body lotion, meals out, etc. You can do it - but you have to be satisfied with little.

I also forgot to say that my mom cleaned a house or two a week for extra money until she was 75 and would drive older ladies to appointments and such - and they would give her $2 for it. (This was 20 years ago - but still wasn’t enough!)
