I fully agree, it's not me that isn't willing to take the financial hit. He likes fancy things, and I would be happy living in a tent. We are VERY different when it comes to that.

I (54M) enjoy the actual work of my corporate job. I took an individual contributor role after years of leading people. (Being a manager is a thankless, miserable existence.) Yes, there was a financial implication, but for me the trade off was well worth it. Now I get to focus on doing what I do best.
I suppose for your husband it depends just how golden those golden handcuffs are. Would he be leaving a substantial amount of money on the table if he left? Also, does his despising the job spill over to home life?
The other factor is the physical toll that despising a job takes on a person. It might not be today, but I believe that catches up to a person in time.
All that said, I would retire today if I didn’t have a child under 18 at home. 😬
