View submission: How awful did people talk pre-social media?
We've got laws that protect you for smacking someone in the mouth in some Australian states if they abuse or threaten you. It's the provocation defense.
You can't inflict grievous bodily harm on them, but you can give them an attitude adjuster.

I love this. People MUST have a basic degree of respect for each other, despite disagreement, or none of this works.

I'm in Canada. I walked out of a store one day and some kids were leaning against my truck hood. Probably 15 or 16, I said gtfo punks, and most got off quick. But one stood his ground and said what you gonna do? I said embarrass you in front of your buddies. He says touch me and you'll go to jail.
So I backhanded him across the sidewalk and told him see ya in court! Still waiting for cops at the door.
If I tried that when I was a kid I'd be stomped into dust

I would say we need some of that over here in the US, but fights in America very often escalate to the point that someone dies. People are nuts here.

Funny, we used to get flak for the idea of "fighting words" here, and there it is dressed up :)

We have laws here (US) too but first you're going to be eating hosptial food through a straw until orthopedics figures out a way to reattach your jaw.
