Perhaps anatomically modern humans possessed the capacity to plan meets? Neanderthals is a hard one to get my head around because of that vast huge space where they lived.

Neanderthals were by all accounts self conscious thinking hominids just like us. They disappeared as a species because we could either out compete them through violence, or a virus got them somehow. But I would say as a fair guess that their socialisation skills were pretty similar to ours, seeing as most primates act similarly in groups
