The British way is don’t pay, and just have a different vehicle next time you go. Works every time, what’s Italy going to do? Come to England?

Cant we do the same in the UK, drive on toll roads and stuff without registering on the website on which you pay this?

Not sure you will be doing much of that anymore...

Rent a car companies and insurance companies are now sharing info with government, this is the reason the letters are arriving to people's houses, not just Italy, south Europe in general. You will let it grow until you decide to take a flight or stopped by the police, and they arrest you until you pay for everything.

They already do this for years in Switzerland and other countries who don't give a damn what you think about them.

It was a rental with the driver's credit card information, if the driver won't pay the rental company will charge the driver credit card holder with a massive surcharge on top of it.

Actually: they were driving a rental. The fines will therefore all be sent to the rental company. The rental company will have a hold on their credit card.

So: yes pay

a friend of mine forgot to pay for his speeding tickets and a few years later, when traveling, they arrested him at the airport and he had to pay the fine plus interest to get out again
