I admit I've never read it, but happy to have guessed right :) Anyway, I assume most people picked up it-IT without knowing about RFC 5646 and as a translation of the (I think) more common en-US (and maybe also due to how the $LANG variable is usually set up on the unices). Maybe it's worth to drop a line or two in the best practice about this?
