None of this has to happen haphazardly. UX and all. (1) some common content could be rendered to text for preview purpose perhaps. A sort of sanitization. (2) external resource acquisition can be as asynchronous, non-blocking, and responsive as you choose to make them (3) a good UX would be predictable and configurable, with reasonable defaults
