But then it's a preformatted line, not a text line.

Arguably. There are other ways to deal with this problem of quoting, if 
the one I suggested becomes unavailable.

I do think that one way or another, it should be possible to represent 
any text line and any preformatted line in a gemini document. Mostly for 
theoretical neatness, but also for practical purposes -- e.g. precisely 
quoting a gemini document.
