I think this is worth exploring if it can be done.

But I can't yet see how a client can determine when it is a cross-site 
link (or for client side
styling a site). Since there may be multiple users on the same site. So 
the author
has to indicate it in a consistent (i.e. standardised) way.

But I like this line of discussion.
