Ask Iwata: Words of Wisdom from Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's Legendary CEO
In 1995 I was a little boy inspired by Shigeru Miyamoto to become a Game Designer. A 'humble' programmer who was the leader of the most innovative games between 1996-1998, like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.
A few years later I discovered that instead of a Designer of games (which I like a lot), it would be a Designer of organizations. And then the figure of Satoru Iwata appeared. Another brilliant programmer who became CEO for Hal Laboratories in 1993, president of Nintendo in 2002, and passed away in 2015.
For me understanding why important figures of the world die of cancer. Is it the huge stress and responsibility? Anyway, those people leave us a mark of impact due to their actions.
"On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer." —Satoru Iwata
In those years I was watching the 'Behind the scenes' blogs like
https://iwataasks.nintendo.com
And it was always interesting to me all the processes behind the creation of a video game. Not only the art, programming and design, but the marketing, internationalization, distribution. We are talking about games with million of players.
The first part of the book connects a lot with the current stage of my life. Being the leader of a small game studio in his 30's, a lot of feelings are similar.
The latest parts are interesting although not that touching, being the moment as the president of a huge company, always with economic challenges, interviews with coworkers, and remembering his best moment.
Some topics told here are Leadership, Relationship with People, the human behind an idol, and a Timeline as a biography.
If you are into gaming or thinking on creating games as a profession, I'd recommend you to take a look at least to the free sample, you'd get surprised :)
