what I use currently use Telegram for

Telegram is like WhatsApp and Discord combined in steroids. It's backend and even encryption methods are proprietary, but for some reason their frontend isn't, and they also offer official API for building clients and bots with it.

There's also an unlimited file upload limit with 2GB per file max for free accounts, which sounds too good to be true, but they made it in a way so people who don't use Telegram can't access the files, thus reducing bandwidth.

Below is what I do with Telegram:

• Talk to people (obviously)
• Download YouTube videos (so that my iOS devices would be able to download videos/audios directly without sacarficing background processes) (also there are public domain videos on YouTube you can clearly download these)
• File conversion (same reason with downloading YouTube videos) (oh I forgot to mention I don't need to rely on sites with a billion ad links on it, Telegram uses much fewer memory than an average modernTM webpage)
• Ingress tools (many Ingress players uses Telegram as their main way of communication, so there are serveal tools that are built upon it)
• Find and download big files
• Find and download big Japanese files
• Find torrent files
• Download web files (it's like how it's sometimes faster through a proxy except you can wait till you want to download because someone else's AWS server did the downloading in a slow site for you)
• Somehow generating links to da world (I think how it works is that it indexes the telegram file through their api then when there's someone going to the link the server immediately acts as a proxy to the telegram servers to download the file for you, there's a repo on that but haven't really dig deep into it)
• Uploading telegram files to clearnet (maybe sketchy) hosts
• Find and download music
• Find and download podcasts (command line heros from Redhat is pretty good, even if you dislike the way modern tech development works you should listen to it to learn more about why things are the way they are now, the host is really fun too)
• Finding public vpn servers (if you're paranoid or sketchy don't do it, public free VPNs are good only when there's a really really good reason to use it, I do this personally because my liver has already been sold out to google.com by playing that one location based game)
• Finding random communities
• Watching the news
• Get traffic info
• Get weather
• Finding ChatGPT bots to play with (I'm pretty sure I found one that uses the davinchi engine, which is the most sophisticated one, by letting multiple bots generate prompts from the same question, too bad there's no memory/mixed memory with other users but that's the cost of being in the banlist of using ChatGPT) (also most of them uses ada which is the cheapest one lol)
• Find supposedly underground arts
• Find (un)original memes

There's more that I do with Telegram but these are the basic things that I am able to do with it.

To me Telegram is like a centralised web, you can do a suprising amount of things in it for a messenging tool, and I personally think a FOSS client is a good trade-off to janky 10MBs websites that contains several malicious links.

And if you're scared of Telegram being the guys that sells your liver to whoever you're afraid of, fake phone apps and well trusted proxies are always an option for using Telegram in a rather safe way possible, just like when you have to do anything big tech related for personal use.
