Re: And in the end

And in the end

But for the most part the environment seems much closer to isolationism than united nations.

It’s a fair point! If Gemini was a forum, most of the threads would have just one post.

I’ve appreciated your posts pulling together and commenting on recent posts from across Geminispace. Thank you! It makes the whole quite a bit more interactive ... even if usually what we end up with is “threads” of two posts.

I’m not sure if this is something to be improved, or working as intended. I already wrote that I’d appreciate a convenient way to say “thanks” as I read someone’s Gemlog; and that I’d use “s/discuss” on Bubble to more conveniently reply to posts. Of course I can also post replies here. But I think there is something about long form content plus a slight barrier to posting that means I’ll only reply if I have something substantial to say.

Part of getting used to Gemini has been learning to do things more slowly. I’m now reading mostly via my “yesterday” meta-aggregator, so I don’t usually read posts the day they’re posted but the next day. Even that feels like maybe too fast, on further reflection.

I believe—I’ve read about it in books—there was a time when you’d send a personal letter then wait weeks for a reply. It’s somewhat hard to wrap my head around. I’m so used to discussions being resolved in minutes, hours, days at the most. Perhaps a 10x or more change in expectations is in order.

At work I decided about a month ago to mostly stop using “chat”—synchronous online communication with my colleagues—in favour of email. That seems to have been a positive change overall, although I find I now need to put more effort into casual, not-quite-work-related, email with my colleagues in order to stay socially connected. Work in progress.

Maybe a similar pattern applies here: slow communication with a bit of extra emphasis on staying sufficiently connected. Maybe I should join in with some “recent posts across Geminispace” posts.

I like to bring my posts to a satisfying conclusion, but I’m out of time—so I will simply cut short my ramblings here.

Postscript

@StackSmith I saw your reply, also, and will reply in short order. Or maybe “eventually”. Anyway, I look forward to replying; thanks for your post.
