Josquin des Prs was born c. 1450 in Hainaut which was at that time part of France. He spent most of his life in nothern Italy as singer and composer. He is generally considered one of the most outstanding composers of his period and contributed substantially to the development of new compositional styles. More details on the composer my be found at http://www.karadar.it/Dictionary/desprez.html and http://www.josquin.com. This modern edition of Josquin's 5 part setting of a dance tune (4 elaborate contrapuntal parts around the tune as cantus firmus) is an attempt at a compromise between the barless mensural notation part books used at the time of the composition and modern time usage of full scores. In order to underline (my own interpretation of) the rhythmic flow of the music I have replaced ties across barlines customary in modern editions with single notes the duration of which takes up part of the succeeding measure. For the the same purpose I often make use of beamings across barlines - and consequently sometimes across line breaks. This editorial method is to be seen as an experiment and I am therefore very much interested in comments and suggestions for improvement. Christian Mondrup scancm@biobase.dk
