Lockdown fitness

2020 05 22

So the lockdown has effectively demolished all my usual excuses for not going out for a run. I can't really complain anymore about not being a morning person or having zero energy in the evening because I now have the entire day at my disposal, and the good fortune to have the sort of job where nobody really cares if I take off for half an hour at whatever time feels 'right' to go for a run.

My previous attempts to get back into running were thwarted by choosing a running plan which was maybe a bit too amitious for my ruined carcass. I started last year with NHS Couch 2 5K [1], which a lot of people have found extremely useful to go from total-non-runner to doing Parkruns and half marathons etc. For me, the change of pace was a little too steep and I eventually started making too many excuses and falling too far behind to claim I was making any kind of progress.

Then earlier this year I found None2Run [2], which was much better for me. However, I still found I was struggling at certain parts of the program and so instead of 'cheating' by giving myself extra breaks, I totally did not cheat by changing the program to better suit my personal expectations. In building this new running program I also learned some things about the other two that I had already tried. I have done a separate post about that, linked below [3].

So maybe someone will find something useful there, although the usual disclaimer applies: don't believe anything you read on the internet, do your own research, check with your GP or personal health professional before you undertake any changes to your existing diet or exercise regemin, and I am not responsible for your decisions or their consequences!
