I listened to two episodes of the Diceology podcast where MadJay Zero talks with Andy Kitkowski about Replays. Perhaps this is a good format for teaching how to play a system instead of sticking to a reference manual style that invites lawyering.
It’s the story of the gaming group, in-game and out-of-game, and it’s a way to teach the game that isn’t limited to 0-1 pages of how the game is being played. I think Zorceror of Zo did the same and I was fascinated back then, too. In my mind, half the book was just talking about the game they played.
Here’s a thread on Reddit about Replays: A fascinating window into the world of Japanese "replays": full transcriptions of RPG sessions used to teach the system and to promote the game to non-players.
It links to a YouTube video by Andy Kitkowski: Destination: Japanese TRPG Replays: What are they? How are they different from Actual Plays?
