Copper by Kazu Kibuishi consists of one-page color strips that remind me a bit of Calvin and Hobbes. There’s a boy, but older than Calvin, and his dog, not a tiger. They both talk to each other, and often the page consists of a dream sequence where one of the two wakes up at the end.
Unlike Calvin and Hobbes philosophy is not too prevalent in either talk or images (no cubism, no meaning of life), and there’s no dad talking nonsense (”builds character”). And still the images leave you with a certain pang, a bit of longing, some meditative moment of introspection. The humor is quietly seeping through the colors, but you don’t laugh out loud. It’s colorful weirdness.
I found this comic via Best Webcomics of 2004. They also have their own review about this comic.
There’s also a longer story from a book called Flight that Kazu Kibuishi edited, if I understood it correctly. Very nice Copper story: Maiden Voyage.
