The research behind Carbolytics identifies and analyzes the carbon emissions of the total number of cookies belonging to the top 1 million websites. The investigation identified more than 21 million cookies per single visit to all these websites, belonging to more than 1200 different companies, which translates to an average of 197 trillion cookies per month, resulting in 11,442 monthly metric tonnes of CO2 emissions. It’s important to understand that this number reflects browser-based cookie traffic and does not include App tracking activity, so we estimate this number to be dramatically higher. – _carbolytics

And we just seem to accept that advertising can fill our public spaces as much as it wants to. That marketers are somehow entitled to whatever space in our gaze and in our minds that they can possibly put up enough money to get ahold of. Ads are also often protected and to deface them in some cases might even be a crime. But more so, I literally cannot choose to NOT have ads in my life. I can’t walk down a public street without being bombarded with ads on billboards, pasted to walls in public transportation stations, and hanging from every storefront and lamppost. Even if I only ever watched public access television (no streaming, no internet platforms), I still would not be able to escape the words from our sponsors. – Ad-hoc Block: Dystopian Worlds and the War for Advertising

Spam in Deutschland:

Google:

These emails — which I encourage you to look up — tell a dramatic story about how Google’s finance and advertising teams, led by Raghavan with the blessing of CEO Sundar Pichai, actively worked to make Google worse to make the company more money. This is what I mean when I talk about the Rot Economy — the illogical, product-destroying mindset that turns the products you love into torturous, frustrating quasi-tools that require you to fight the company’s intentions to get the service you want. – The Man Who Killed Google Search

Such a nice rant with a good ending!

You want to order from a local restaurant, but you need to download a third-party delivery app, even though you plan to pick it up yourself. The prices and menu on the app are different to what you saw in the window. When you download a second app the prices are different again. You ring the restaurant directly and it says the number is no longer in service. You go to the restaurant and order in person. You mention that their website has the wrong number and the woman behind the counter says they have to contact the company who designed the site for changes, which will cost them, but most people just order through an app anyway. – Heat Death of the Internet, by Gregory Bennett, for Takahē magazine
