I woke up around six, the alarm was supposed to go off at 6:30. I left the apartment at 6:45. it was still dark, the moon hanging above the rock face behind Leukerbad. There is a cable car that goes up there, too. But I wanted to hike up there.
800m, 2h. That is the plan. First, one walks through the villlage. Then the trail takes you through a small wood and it starts climbing. The shadows are still deep but the sky is bright. The larches are the last trees and then the switchbacks begin.
Up, up, up, back and forth, along the wall, along the cracks, then into the crack, then out of it and over it, and further up.
And then you’re up there and there‘s the moon again, hanging over the glacier – and the glacier is far away, having retreated over the years as the global cooking takes its toll.
The view is fantastic and more fantastic still because it’s so early in the morning. The first hikers start appearing near the end. The ones I meet start at the top. I feel like I must have been the first one to arrive by foot, today.
Since it all went so well I now have to wait an hour before the family arrives…
Claudia took some pictures from the cable car.
