Late morning. Had coffee. Streaming music via the iPhone to the speaker.
Why am I streaming a podcast of a radio show to the speaker?
The old iPod Classic with 80GiB of music is dead. When I press play, it realises that the battery is empty and powers down, even though it is connected to a charger. If the battery is dead, you can’t even run this shit from a wall plug.
The old iPod Classic with 80GiB could be fixed. A new battery. Replace the hard disk with an SD card. These things exist. I wrote emails to four repair and refurbishing shops in the area, but they don’t do it.
I could order this stuff from China and attempt to fix it myself, but I hate doing this.
The iPad doesn’t have access to the many GiB of music on my drive because it can only sync with iTunes. The Apple Music App does not offer a file repository for me to fill via iTunes. In iTunes, with the iPad plugged in, I can tell it to sync just some folders. When I do that, it warns me: do I want to erase all the media on the iPad in order to sync? No!
When I try to upgrade the iPad using iTunes, it tells me that the iPad has purchased items that I should copy over before upgrading, but it doesn’t tell me which ones. All the sync has been switched off (because of the above), so it’s not obvious how this will ever work.
Luckily the iPad can itself download new editions of the operating system and upgrade itself, and then I don’t get the warning.
I don’t remember how I got the few albums on the iPad onto the iPad. Maybe I bought them? When I mount the iPad on my real laptop, no iTunes, I only get access to photos and app storage. The music is not accessible.
The only thing that works reliably is my podcatcher (I use iCatcher), and Bandcamp (I wonder for how long).
Of course, I don’t have access to the files I downloaded from Bandcamp to the iPad. I only have access to those files via the Bandcamp website.
Ah. I blame them all. Apple. The music industry. The programmers. Their managers. Their executives. The lobbyists. The lawmakers supporting this shit show.
I have 60GiB and more on my devices and can’t use them for the music on my disk drives because they all fear pirates.
🔥💩🔥💩🔥💩🔥
Makes me want to be a pirate. 🏴☠️
I’m also in the market for a small MP3 player with a screen, headphone jack, no wifi, no battery, i.e. wall plug, and an SD card for storage.
Like this Hidizs AP80, Musik Player mit 1x MicroSD Slot (DAC: ES9218P) + FM Radio for CHF 189.00.

I had an iPhone for about a year, because my GF upgraded and she was still under contractual obligation to finish paying on the old one. My opinion of the device didn’t change much. The hardware is good. As long as you’re willing to be led down Apple’s garden path, the user experience is good, especially for folks using a screenreader. Stray from the path and expect frustration. I wouldn’t do it again.
For what it’s worth, my GF uses VLC on her iPhone. Not sure if that would be a useful suggestion or not. I never played music on mine; it was purely a comms device and navigational aid.

Yeah, I only started thinking about it because the iPod (running Rockbox) broke down. It remains a proprietary cage, for sure. I guess I just need to say it again every now and then.
