2022-07-23 Solo Dungeon Development

My wife is planning a trip to Lyon and I haven’t had breakfast. The bread still has to go into the oven!

I just saw @Sumire mention *DELVE*:

@Sumire

… a map drawing game that puts you in control of a dwarven hold as you discover the horrors that lurk below. This 44 page zine has everything you need to generate natural formations, forgotten ruins, enemies, wyrd magics, and ancient monstrosities. It has a simple turn-based combat system, rules for building your hold and optional challenges for a harder experience. – DELVE: A Solo Map Drawing Game

DELVE: A Solo Map Drawing Game

It reminded me of *How to Host a Dungeon* which I played once in 2008.

In this game you will create a unique world with randomly-generated features and resources like underground rivers, valuable ores, and mysterious caverns. Your world will be shaped by civilizations, settlements, and monsters, as they dig dungeons, expand their lairs, gather treasure, and fight for survival. – How to Host a Dungeon

And recently I saw the following:

It’s a set of downtime procedures that can be used between gaming sessions to generate ideas for consecutive quests set in a larger year-long time scale. They both simulate changes to the game environment and provide tools for ruling the Mountain. In a solo game you take a role of the Dwarven Lord, and in a group play PCs become the Dwarven Council making decisions collectively. – Heart of the mountain

Heart of the mountain

I guess we’re seeing more *Dwarf Fortress* style games. 😆

I don’t think I’m the kind of person to play these kinds of games – even though I am vaguely interested. To me, it seems that these would require some quiet time off, no programming, no writing. The strange part is that I don’t feel there are enough “gaps” in my life? I almost always have stuff to do, never feel like I need to find a new hobby… a bit like when we talked about having kids. There’s no empty time in our lives to fill with kids! It would always mean cutting back on doing something that we either have to do, or want to do. How strange. There is never enough time.

Here’s a month of *Heart of the Mountain*.

It is winter and we face three dangers (rolled a 5).

The Wargoats Stables, Vanishing Skeletons Ninjas (1), The ONE forbidden spell

We found signs of necromancy in the stables. Goats had been wounded before, but we were never able to catch the fiends. But now it’s confirmed: we caught Filgr in a necromantic circle, singing, surrounded by dancing skeletons.

We’re sending recruits to deal with the problem (-1 Power).

The Wargoats Stables, Armory Chief Inspector (1), Abandon your post

As we made the rounds, we found that the Armory Chief Inspect had abandoned his post. Deserted! They are nowhere to be found.

We’re reorganising the council and made Astr the new Armory Chief Inspector (-1 Power).

Throne Room, Silent Snake Enforcers (2), Diamond-eating caterpillar

On the third week, shape-changing snake people released a carbophage caterpillar in the throne room and killed most of the guards; I barely made it out alive and triggered the stone crusher trap. It was a close call, and we still heard the caterpillar gnawing at the foundations of the room. I went to the Red Sanctum and whispered to the Great Dragon. I had to make promises. You understand? In any case, the gnawing stopped (+ 3 Corruption).

Current state: 0 Power, 3 Corruption.
