2022-06-28 Evolution of a map

I’m hungry and I don’t want to fix myself lunch, nor do I want to go eat in a restaurant all by myself. Instead, I’m going to post about maps. In German we call this “Übersprungsverhalten”, displacement activity.

OK, I want to draw a map for a third level of a goblin town dungeon. I’m using Gridmapper. At first, I only have the stairs reaching the third level, and the vague idea that there is some sort of king and an arena down here.

Gridmapper

Some stairs

Next, using the mouse to draw some vague rooms and shapes, and adding some details to where I think the throne will stand. I think there’ll be some fire connection: lava separating the king, his wizard advisor, and his six body guards from the rest.

A throne room emerges

More details get added. An escape tunnel. Pens for the fire beetles. Columns and variety in corners, beds, chests, tables, cupboards or whatever other furniture. Working from the bottom right corner.

Tunnels, beds, chests

Moving to the top left corner and the arena, and the spider goblins with their stable.

Stables or prison cells, who can tell

Moving to the bottom left corner, adding more rooms, caves, another statue.
