Sitting in the home office, thinking about the time I spent walking to and from the office.
I used to listen to podcasts while walking to work and back: the sounds along the road are not great, and that gave me about an hour a day. These days working at home, it’s much harder to find the time. When my wife is busy and I’m doing household chores or cooking is the only moments these days where there is nobody to talk to, no natural soundscape to listen to, where my fingers are busy and the mind is ready to go a wandering.

I used to drive an hour each way for work. Sometimes I’d carpool, other times I’d drive alone. And when driving alone, I’d listen to podcasts.
Now I work from home and have to make time to listen to podcasts. I cleaned our laundry room this morning. During that time I listened to a podcast. When I do the dishes, I try to listen to a podcast.
I find more and more I prefer podcasts, the conversations, over other audio media (e.g., TV shows, movies). If I want a story, I’ll read a book.

I agree. I prefer podcasts to TV shows and movies because the audio-only aspect allows me to continue doing simple manual tasks. Which is also why I don’t like video bloggers on YouTube and all that: they are not engaging enough to watch exclusively, but the visual aspect prevents me from doing anything else. (And no, Google Glass is not the solution.)

I feel this so much. I used to /devour/ audiobooks on my walk to and from the office. The number of books I’ve read during the last two years has halved.

Out of curiosity, are there any podcasts you recommend? I’m currently listening to Behind the Bastards. Probably not everyone’s cup of tea; some of the humor is pretty transgressive. A couple of years ago I stumbled across It Could Happen Here, also hosted by Robert Evans, and I found it quite compelling.
