Sunday late morning (14:31) and I’m still at the laptop. Outside the weather is grey and windy. Not a day to leave the house. I’m enthusiastic about new role-playing games, I’m still curious about getting a Usenet server installed, and reading Mastodon…
I’ve been seeing the following link posted, followed by a lot of people saying “yes please!” 😅
The key issue for Meta is transatlantic data transfers, regulated via the so-called Privacy Shield and other model agreements that Meta uses or used to store data from European users on American servers. The current agreements to enable data transfers are currently under heavy scrutiny in the EU. In its annual report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Meta warns that if a new framework is not adopted and the company is no longer allowed to use the current model agreements “or alternatives,” the company will “probably” no longer be able to offer many of its “most significant products and services,” including Facebook and Instagram, in the EU … – Mark Zuckerberg and team consider shutting down #Facebook and Instagram in Europe if Meta can not process Europeans’ data on US servers
@xerz posted the source:
If a new transatlantic data transfer framework is not adopted and we are unable to continue to rely on SCCs or rely upon other alternative means of data transfers from Europe to the United States, we will likely be unable to offer a number of our most significant products and services, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe, which would materially and adversely affect our business, financial condition, and results of operations. – Annual Report pursuant to Section 13 or 15(d) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2021

Cue stories on how “hard” it is to build “a global service” in “changing and diverse regulatory environment” 😉 If you see that kind of reporting, please remember: it is Facebook’s conscious business decision to run a global monopoly. If it was a decentralized, federated network, it would not have these kinds of problems. So, cry me a river!

2022 is really starting to look up!
Perfect! 😂
People immediately figured this to be the “stick” with which Facebook threatens Europe with the promised investiment of “10,000 jobs” a few weeks ago being the prepared “carrot”.
And of course I saw this comic, too:
She holds up a shield saying: free hugs! They hug. He realises that she’s “documenting medical data for sale to third parties.” He’s confused: “I thought hugs were free?” She answers: “No money changed hands!” – Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal: Data
