2022-02-04 Buying RPGs

Claudia is calling her dad, talking about cross country skiing and how to write mails containing a link…

Yesterday, on a whim, I bought the Mindjammer Bundle of Holding. I bought it even though my heart is in Minimal German Fantasy Traveller right now… I remember Sarah Newton from G+, though. I was always Mindjammer curious. Back then I was also a lot more interested in Fate, to be honest (and Fudge before that). Now I’m thinking of that Gatecrasher review I posted on Usenet in 1998… I never did play a longer Fudge or Fate campaign. Short one-shots or two to three session adventures, that’s it. Anyway, I kind of want to know more about it, but I fear the page count. And who am I going to play these games with? I think I need to reassemble a crew of players willing to play other games than D&D 5.

On the fediverse, @rafial asking people for first, last, most played and recommended role-playing games. I said:

I’m recommending Classic Traveller because there is no character advancement, at all. No experience points. You’re starting adventuring as a complete and competent person, and that’s it. Experience points and levelling up has been so ingrained in mainstream role-playing games that it’s hard to find games that don’t do it. In Fate games you can rearrange your skill pyramid, and that’s it. In A Wicked Age only has rules for the one session (“chapter”); at the end there are rules detailing how one of them can come back in the next session – unless there’s a lucky fit with the next oracle in which case other characters can come back as well. Anyway, it’s rare.

Helmbarten is, of course my own Minimal German Fantasy Traveller game. 😅

@remotenemesis replied to @rafial’s post and mentioned Hypertellurians. There’s a copy of the game rules available from their web site, and a PDF to buy. I like the size of the document!

The hardcover book is 156 pages long in A5 format – Hypertellurians

The way I think about it, that’s about half as many pages in A4 format – and that’s pretty close to the 64 page format of the old B/X D&D.

I didn’t buy it because I already fear I won’t be playing Mindjammer (let alone all the other games I have bought).
