So… 2021. The Covid-19 Pandemic is still ongoing. At one point I said that the problem in Switzerland was that people confused being rich with being smart. But all the money in the world did not help Switzerland: the tolerance for homeopathy laying the groundwork for a perceived equivalence of all treatments, strong individualism resisting the advice given my experts, distrust of state interference when it harms the economy, and yet the inability to act at lower levels of the federation because of an inability to accept responsibility and an unwillingness to pay for it, specially in comparison to other cantons, the fear and hate that the far right has been peddling, and all their rhetoric tricks – “I’m not afraid!” and “Do your own research!” combined with the inability to assess societal risk and to discern between real research and fake look alikes, the Russian troll army always looking to exploit the cracks in our society, all of that came together – our vaccination rates are low, our unhappiness is high, my confidence in the common sense of my fellow citizens is destroyed, my misanthropy at an all-time high. What fiasco.
On the other hand, Claudia and I are doing OK, at an individual level! When I remember how I felt at the end of 2015 and at the end of 2016, there is no comparison. Sure, her Calcium is still high, she takes Vitamin D like a madwoman, there’s the potential for osteopenia, possibly an issue with the parathyroid glands… but it’s not right here, right now.
We’re happy working from home, no commutes, no open space offices, no constant interruptions. It’s a bit tricky to remember to get out and move around. Our outdoor activity hasn’t been great. We’re not running as much as we want to. Let’s hope we get a grip on that next year.
I’m still baking bread every day or two. So delicious! 😄
