Pictures from our third day on the Galápagos islands.
Going for a walk
Behind the interpretation center on San Cristóbal is a little hill.
Lava rocks
The lava rocks are the remnants of the crust covering the most recent lava stream.
Cactus in bloom
Too bad the cactuses in our living room never seem to flower.
Lava lizard
"Keep on walking or I'll do some push-ups!"
Crotophaga ani
The smooth billed ani bird was introduced in the 1960s, presumably to help against cattle ticks. Guess what happened next...
The bay behind the hill
From the lookout on the hill behind the interpretation center you can see a beautiful bay.
Alex, looking at the camera
Instead of looking at the scenery, presumably.
Flowers!
Providing a tiny bit of shade from the relentless sun.
More flowers
It's hard to remember the intense heat! I remember we were sweating profusely at the time.
This is Darwin!
Charles Darwin visited the island in 1835, on the famous voyage of the Beagle.
The coast
Volcanic rocks, trees, waves, the ocean. My favourite colour palette.
Same view point
This time looking in the other direction.
Opuntia flowers
So beautiful!
Amblyrhynchus cristatus
Marine iguana is not impressed.
Iguana crossing
Very slow iguana is slow.
No service
This little sea lion decided to sleep in the pub.
The sea lion thinks no repairs are necessary
They don't really care whether they are climbing a rock or a patio.
Los muelles de San Cristóbal
San Cristóbal main street
Tourists are enjoying their wifi in the coffee shops.
Frigate bird juveniles
They have white heads when they're young.
Two blue footed boobies
Amblyrhynchus cristatus
Still not impressed.
One blue footed booby
Well, if you look carefully, I do wear blue shoes!
Blue footed booby
Amblyrhynchus cristatus
They really look like little dragons.
Amblyrhynchus cristatus
Look at that tongue. Looks like a cat...
The booby dance involves showing your blue feet
Blue feet means that you're a good hunter and well fed.
Blue footed boobie trying to remember his dance
Perhaps we just don't get the expressionist dance!
What are you looking at!?
We embarassed the poor bird.
The best part of the blue footed booby dance!
This is sky-pointing: head and bill point up to the sky while the wings and tail are raised. Very impressive.
Sicalis flaveola
The saffron finch can be seen everywhere.
Sea lions sleeping
This time, near the stairs.
Frigate birds look like vultures
It's that beak...
Sunset!
There are about 90 cruise boats on a strict schedule. There are usually two or three boats per spot.
Claudia & Alex
Friggin' birds!
Frigate birds following the ship. Watch out for the poop!
Sunset
Another day has come and gone and we can barely remember home.
