2019-08-23 The game of Go

I just read a blog post about somebody who is trying to get back into Go, talking about ranked play, anxiety, and goals. I’m not sure what to make of it. I tried to learn how to play. I bought a board and played 9×9, 13×13, and 19×19 games. I registered on a server and tried to get better. But I think I just lack the ambition. I played a few times with newbie friends. I think I lost every single online Go game on that server. I lost every game against GNU Go. 🤷‍♂️

What should I do now? I like the *idea* of Go. I like the board and the tokens. I like the simplicity of the rules, the fact that on some level you need intuition and not the brain of a mentat who memorized a thousand chess openings. But I guess I’m also impatient and a bad strategist, a slow learner – and lazy.

I went to the local Go club once and played one game which I lost and then I was forever too shy to go again and picked up other hobbies instead. It’s like other board games. I like them in theory. I know about board game night. I’ve been there a few times. But I don’t actually make time for it. I don’t want the commute. I don’t like strangers. It’s simply easier to stay at home and work on an interesting programming puzzle.

There are a bunch of chess variants I’d like to try playing someday, especially Shoji and Tamerlane Chess. Although part of me suspects that the allure of the unknown will be better than the actual experience (much like drinking absinthe).
