2019-07-09 Burning Wheel

There are basically four areas where my preferences differ from *Burning Wheel*.

2016-07-07 Barbie Gaming

2012-08-16 Simple Burning Wheel

2011-06-21 I Prefer Traditional Games, I Think

2011-05-14 Role Play, not Wish Fulfilment

It’s strange to post summaries of blog posts written so long ago. But today I was talking to @awinter and @PresGas about *Burning Wheel* and I realized that I hadn’t put it all together in a single post. But now I do – to be used in another eight years as a point of comparison. 🙂

Ah, and something I had nearly forgotten: I don’t like Luke Crane himself. He seemed arrogant when he talked about people wishing for PDFs of his books, or when people made special Burning Wheel dice, dismissive of efforts to tinker with the system even though he himself kept doing it, and insistent that people play the game exactly as written since it apparently was so perfect you shouldn’t have to house rule it, even though house ruling has been an integral part of the hobby since the very beginning.

I dismissed it, moved on, decided this was not my community anyway.

Recently, however, Jeremy Friesen commented on a failed Kickstarter by Luke Crane where he included a friend that was involved in a transgressive scene in a game, maybe more than once. I hadn’t ever heard of it but I’m also not very connected so I suggest you read Jeremy’s post yourself, and follow some of the links: Giving Platform.

Sadly, you can’t really tell what’s true and what’s not from reading a blog post or two. You have to delve into the links and the archives and spend hours on that, and that is a grind, a destructive way to spend your time. An alternative that wouldn’t work in a court of law but works well in social life is to simply cut your ties, cut your losses, and move on. Check out my summary of how to deal with narcissists to know what I’m talking about.

Thanks, Jeremy, for bringing this to my attention.

Absolutely. My follow-up highlighted both the immediate effort to apply pressure AND my current effort to say “I’m open for a Burning Wheel game, but only if we all consent (and here’s the facts).”
