@Halfjack wrote about gods that have nothing to do with us. I’m not quite sure where he wants to take the thought of mausoleums in the desert where they “exist” and how they are strange but still try to be “approachable” – but it did kick off a new line of thought, taking me away from the ideas of Planescape and the like where follower-count is everything. Enough with the rationalizations.
gods that have nothing to do with us
But if we accept the irrationality of it all, then that’s the beginning of a Lovecraftian horror, of course. How many insects have died in my path because of reasons they could not comprehend? I think about this a lot. How many plants and animals benefit and suffer through us for reasons they cannot comprehend? And don’t we suffer and benefit for no apparent reason? Then the gods being “approachable” is a bit like us keeping dogs. What does the dog think of us, and how little does it understand of our lives? And yet, here we are and there seems to be a connection. And we love dogs. So innocent. So happy to see us! So sad when we are gone, but also endlessly amused by the unchanging game of throwing a stick. So cute!
And that thought in turn reminds me of this thing I saw on Tumblr a while ago:
In the dog world, humans are elves that routinely live to be 500+ years old.
“They live so long…but the good ones still bond with us for our entire lives.”
“These immortals are so kind we must be good friends to them”
“Now I am old. The fur around my muzzle is grey and my joints ache when we walk together. Yet she remains unchanged, her hair still glossy, her skin still fresh, her step still sprightly. Time doesn’t touch her and yet I love her still.”
“For generations, he has guarded over my family. Since the days of my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather he has kept us safe. For so long we thought him immortal. But now I see differently, for just as my fur grows gray and my joints grow stiff, so too do his. He did not take in my children, but gave them away to his. I will be the last that he cares for. My only hope is that I am able to last until his final moments. The death of one of his kind is so rare. The ending of a life so long is such a tragedy. He has seen so much, he knows so much. I know he takes comfort in my presence. I only wish that I will be able to give him this comfort until the end.”
