OK, I’m going to do this. I bought myself a German translation of *Remembering the Kanji: A Complete Course on How Not to Forget the Meaning and Writing of Japanese Characters* by James W. Heisig, so now it’s *Die Kanji lernen und behalten 1* by J.W. Heisig / R. Rauther.
I still have my Langenscheidt’s Großwörterbuch Japanisch-Deutsch (Zeichenwörterbuch). And today I ordered *Japanisch Schritt für Schritt Band 1: Der Sprachkurs für Unterricht und Selbststudium* by Martin and Maho Clauß.
And I found a friendly person on Mastodon to practice with! I have some stuff to look up in the online dictionary ( JMdictDB, the Japanese Dictionary Database) and in the Kanji Dictionary.
This is cool because once I find the Kanji in the Kanji dictionary, the entry with the ｢I｣ prefix refer to the Heisig dictionary and entries with the ｢I｣ prefix refer to the Spahn & Hadamitsky dictionary, and the Langenscheidt is based on the same!
So I looked up 観光 in the Japanese Dictionary Database and get *sightseeing*, then I look up 観 and 光 in the Kanji Dictionary and get indexes for Spahn & Hadamitsky (I5c13.7 and I3n3.2), and Heisig (L572 and L119).
And now I’m off to read what they have to say!
Hm. I am disappointed: the German Heisig numbers are wrong.
Then again, the Jisho site pulls all these sources together: searching for 観 #kanji gives me Kun and On readings as well as stroke order. This is great.
