I can only read encrypted mail when I’m at home where my secret key is. Sometimes this is maddening. That’s how used we have become to IMAP. Remember POP3? You could only read email on one machine. Once you downloaded your mail, it was gone from the server.
And that’s another reason why I think instant messaging is the new mail.

Heh. My days of running my own mail server are over. It was simply too much of a hassle. I had it working for my Raspberry Pi for a while (Raspberry Pi als privater Email Server) but there were so many things to consider:

I decided that the risk of me getting it wrong was higher than the cost of me using Gmail. Specially since all the personal stuff happens elsewhere.

I just saw a recommendation by @sir for Migadu.com. I think I’m going to give them a try. Also Swiss based. As I said elsewhere, I don’t quite understand why that is a benefit in terms of security. I do understand that it’s a benefit in terms of tax evasion, of course... Oh well. They’re hosting their stuff in France, by the way.

Stop Using Encrypted Email. People will reply in plain text, quote of the entire exchange. People will archive the mails they receive in plain text so they can search them later. People will store their mails on big, central servers where they can be easily compromised by state agencies and criminals. Mail metadata will forever be public. All of these things are true even if you use encrypted mail.
