Added a lot more legs to a critter I had lying around. Giant centipede? I think this is good enough.
Giant centipedes are a bit like “light” carrion crawlers. They don’t actually kill you, but they waste your precious resources as one after another in your party is reduced to helplessness. Turn back? Abandon the victims? Push on and find that your retreat has been cut off, that you lack the strength in numbers to return the way you came?
Sadly, that’s not how I remember encounters turning out, but perhaps I just didn’t use enough of them, or I placed them too close to the exit, or I didn’t dare add them for fear of frustrating my players.
Perhaps the monster manual should contain some suggested use for these critters. “One way to use them is...”

I have a fondness for giant centipedes, mainly from far eastern influences, since the centipede is one of the Five Vermin (along with viper, toad, spider, and scorpion). But mainly because mukade feature in *Bushido*.
And of course giant is relative. I’ve had players face off against a purple worm sized one with shell of iron before (sent by the Yama Kings from the underworld to fetch someone to his appointment - admittedly he was a couple of centuries late).
