Centaurs are wise. Chiron helped educate many Greek heroes. Wikipedia lists them: Asclepius, Aristaeus, Ajax, Aeneas, Actaeon, Caeneus, Theseus, Achilles, Jason, Peleus, Telamon, Perseus, sometimes Heracles, Oileus, Phoenix, and in one Byzantine tradition, even Dionysus. Wikipedia also lists Chiron’s skills as “medicine, music, archery, hunting, prophecy.” Nice! Then again, Chiron was a bit different than the others. The others, it turns out, were “born of sun and raincloud”. This is great. Also: “centaurs were notorious for being wild, lusty, overly indulgent drinkers and carousers, given to violence when intoxicated, and generally uncultured delinquents.” Hell yeah!
Can’t draw men. Can’t draw horses. Need a centaur. My wife suggests silhouettes in a forest. I like the idea. First attempt.
Much better after some serious back and forth with my wife.

You forget the abduction of human women.

Oh, centaurs did that? I remember wondering about female centaurs and finding a passage in the Wikipedia page saying that they got a mention or two. Male only centaurs would also be interesting. The entire sex thing does go into uncomfortable territory, though. Male savages, lusty, raucous, drunk – it’s an interesting starting point.

oh dear, oh dear...where do I begin...
When I said that centaurs were known for abducting human women, I was being polite. Centaurs were known for sexually assaulting, raping and abducting human women. For instance the wife of Herakles, Deianara, was assaulted and saved in the nick of time by her husband.
This puts a whole new spin on the ending of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, check out
So...I hope I did not crush too many of your plans.

All I’m saying is that I’m listening to the Harry Potter book about the Order of the Phoenix, at the moment... 😱

Well...do not listen to the ending before you go to sleep then, it might give you nightmares.

I wonder how much of this to add to the monster manual. How much sex to imply, how much sexual violence to imply? When I saw that part in the movie where the centaurs hauled the lady in pink away, I was shocked because terrible violence was implied, but I didn’t know the details, and I don’t remember her coming back because I didn’t see all the movies.
Currently, the centaur description says “Unfortunately they also love to drink and carouse, and they are prone to start fights when drunk.” Perhaps I should add: “Depending on how far you want to take it, their lusty nature also lends itself to darker sexual themes. Make sure you know your players before going there.” Or something along these lines? Previously, on sex in my RPG life:
Gulp! 😥
